An amazing sounding album which combines great harmonies with fantastic songs that at times are played with just an acoustic guitar; all of which is to Phelps advantage and certainly a joy to hear. (Russell Hill, Maverick Magazine, March 2009)
Give Us a Song tips a hat to some of my singer-songwriter influences and includes new original music as well as arrangements of folk and gospel hymns. The album includes the profoundly humorous My Dog Jesus, written by Kurt Fortmeyer, C.J. Watson and Al DeTrolio.
If You Come Up Empty is a very popular original tune from the album. I also enjoyed creating fresh arrangements of traditional hymns and gospel music for Give Us a Song.
Thumb-style guitar creates a toe-tapping accompaniment for Precious Memories, and the combination of finger-style guitar with vocal instrumentation on the Shaker hymn Simple Gifts crafts an eloquently beautiful ending to the recording.
