Just say “The Mini” to folks in Indianapolis, and they know you’re talking about the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon. It’s a half-marathon that is part of the month-long festivities leading up to the Indianapolis 500 on Memorial Day Weekend.
I’m not a runner, but I will be participating in the Mini again this year. Race organizers position entertainers along the course, and they space us out just far enough so that by the time the runners get out of earshot of one, they start hearing the next one. As entertainers, we get the joy of encouraging runners along the way.
This year, I’m at location #2, on the east side of the White River bridge on Washington Street. Runners won’t have finished the first mile by the time they get to me, and there won’t be much space between the front of the pack and the back of the pack.
Except for the early call (the course is closed by 7:00 a.m., so performers need to be in place by about 6:30), this will be a great time. The 500 Festival is one of the signs of spring in Indianapolis, and playing upbeat music to encourage the many Mini participants seems like a great way to celebrate.
