Here are a few of my favorite people and places, artists that I like and have performed with, and folks that have helped me out.

Good Folks to Know

  • Weed Patch Music Company. Located in the heart of downtown Nashville, Indiana, the folks at Weed Patch carry a variety of acoustic instruments, and they really know their stuff. Pay them a visit when you’re in southern Indiana.
  • Fotos by Cheri. Cheri Herron is an Indianapolis treasure as a photographer, specializing in nature shots, weddings and other events, and concert photography. She has photographed a few of my shows, does excellent work and is a joy to work with.
  • Blue Tide Productions. Zach Reed of Blue Tide Productions did many of the photos that appear on this site. Blue Tide also does web site and T-shirt design.
  • Segment of Society Promotions. Robin Coleman books top notch touring folk and acoustic musicians into several Indianapolis venues.
  • Fields of Bluegrass and Redbud Radio. Host Cary Allen Fields plays the best in contemporary bluegrass and Americana every week on WICR-FM in Indianapolis.
  • Metamora Old Time Music Festival. Gail Ginther has been called by some “the patron saint of acoustic music in Indiana.” Maybe she’s not ready for sainthood yet, but this festival features some of the best acoustic and old time musicians that the tri-state has to offer. I’ll be there Labor Day weekend to perform and conduct music workshops.
  • Fred Kelly Picks. Fred Kelly’s Slick Picks (the orange medium gauge) are my thumbpick of choice. The Freedom Picks are a great innovation in finger picks, too!

Sites Using My Music

  • DisciplesNet Church is church on the internet highway with walls as wide as the world. I have recorded for several of their worship services.
  • The Center for Faith and Giving helps churches understand and proclaim the biblical witness as it relates to stewardship. It was a privilege to provide music for their introductory video.

Musicians and Bands

  • Patchwork. Rick Garrett and Holly Smith travel Indiana and the Midwest, and I always have a blast when we get together to make music. See the highlights from our show together at the Pixy Theatre in Edinburgh.
  • Kara Barnard. In addition to being a nationally recognized multi-instrumentalist, Kara is one of the owners of Weed Patch Music Company, an outstanding teacher and an all around great person.
  • Brian Keith Wallen. Brian is a true rising star in acoustic traditional and blues music. He is the 2011 Cincinnati blues champion, and it’s my pleasure to work with him often as part of The Champions Tour.
  • Ted Yoder. Ted is the 2010 national hammered dulcimer champion, claiming that title at the Walnut Creek Festival in Winfield, Kan. Ted also works with Brian and me as part of The Champions Tour.
  • Kara Kulpa. Originally from the Midwest but now calling Massachusetts home, this young woman is one talented singer, instrumentalist and songwriter, and she’s an all around wonderful person!
  • Chris Wolf. Better Be Scared if you’re going to listen to Chris Wolf, or at least bring your invisible pets along.
  • Travis Creek Bluegrass. This bluegrass trio out of Nashville, Ind., bangs out some rock-solid down home bluegrass.
  • The Peach Pickers. This troop of pickers plays regularly at the Fickle Peach in Muncie, Ind. When they’re defenses are down, they’ll let an occasional folk singer sit in with the group.
  • Randy Buckner. Randy is one of the premier Travis-style guitarists, and he’s also an all around good guy. Check out his Solomatic 4000 guitar, aka “Big Red”, built by Brian Ison.

  1. Hi Dean, just looking over you website and email. I see where you have Kara Barnard listed and Travis Creek (Dan Cantwell). I take music lessons from Kara every other week, was there today in fact. She is a great music teacher and a dear friend, she has taught me much and yet I have so much more to learn. I also take lesson on the Hammered Dulcimer from Dan and he has been a great help to me as well. Some of us that were there at Metamora will also be there on the 29th at Muddy Boots so will see you then. Marilyn
